Welcome Class of 2012!

As we begin the 2011-12 school year, I am reading "The Winter of Red Snow" to my classes. I love this historical fiction novel, which is part of the Dear America series. In it, Abigail Stewart gets an up-close look at the Continental army as they suffer through the winter of 1777-78 in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. If you're not crazy about social studies, this book helps you learn about the Revolutionary War without even realizing it. I use this book nearly every year with my classes, because I love it so much.

How disappointed I was when I learned that I could not order more copies, because the book is out of print! I hate it when this happens to excellent literature. For example, "The Great Brain" series is also out of print. My kids love to check out this series every year (partly because I push it on them), and the books are getting tattered. However, when they're gone, they're gone, because I can't find them anywhere. Heavy sigh......

What are some of your favorite titles?

  1. In the beginning of the year you recommended some books, remember? I'm starting to read The Hunger Games and Leven Thumps: The Gateway to Foo, and they're the best books I've ever read in my whole entire life. I can't tell you who my name is or else you'll find out who I am...

  4. Is "Out of My Mind" a good book? Don't ask me for my name because I don't want you to find out.....

  5. I have heard from two very good sources (Mrs. Ivy and Mrs. Kutach) that "Out of My Mind" is, indeed, a good book. Also, as you can see, my former student, Rafay, likes it. Hi Rafay!

  6. The original first comment was by me(Archie). I like the part where Leven and his friends were on the icy ocean driving when Winter was turning the water into ice in front of them.

  9. The Maze Runner is the best book I've ever read though it has some sad parts in it like when Chuck sacrificed himself for Thomas right before Gally's knife hit Thomas.

  12. Dear Symone,
You can check out books in my room during warm-up time, or any time you finish seat work early (except when taking tests). You may check out two books at a time. I can't let you come after school, because I will be on duty. That would leave you unsupervised, which isn't allowed. Sorry :(
